I have not tried mythtv because I'd rather this machine be general purpose. One day, I'll invest time and money getting a dedicated machine and a gnu/linux friendly card to make a nice mythtv box. Right now, I'm happy to have a way to watch shows like Nova, Nature and Star Trek without disturbing the kid's play and having to remember when they air.
The better card is discussed with links on the site pointed to. I'd like to know what kind of problem you had accessing it and if others have similar problems. In the mean time, I'll copy a few sections of that page here: /********************************************************************** This is not working and might never. The compenents look good. It contains a Vics Xcode 2105 hardware encoding chip, a LGDT3303 ATSC/QAM tuner which is supposed to be able to receive both broadcast and digital cable signals, and a Philips SAA7136E DVB-T digital terrestrial receiver. If the MPEG encoder is not intentionally crippled, this device should serve its purpose well into the future but a similar card requires firmware, nasty! BT dvb and lgdt330x modules load without error but I don't know where the video device shows up. It's not /dev/video anything. I should probably install MythTV, but this is too powerful a computer to devote to TV. **********************************************************************/ I'm either missing something basic, like the device name used or I'm going to have to wait a while for this card to work for me. The page has images and links to more information you might enjoy.
