We went with Inkscape. It's FOSS and works great! Opens up AI files just fine.

Not exactly what you're asking, but I wanted to point out that Adobe does make 
a trial version available.  AFAIK, it is not crippled but does expire.  Beware 
the download is 1.29GB!
