I was hoping there was a cable modem/firewall combination. Alas, there
doesn't seem to be. Seems like a no brainer but that's just me.

Agree. Get a cheap $20-$30 router, it'll do the job and you'll recoup
the cost in energy savings pretty fast.
Or spring for something a little more expensive that'll run Tomato or
*wrt. You'll get lots more functionality.

If heat is a concern, I would go buy a newer router. My router is about 6
years old, runs considerably cooler and I have the signal strength boosted
through Tomato.
It works well enough.

Ah, there's the rub. The router is an old device, 10+ yo, and it
generates heat. !20 + degrees for the power brick and over 100 degrees
for the box. Its just something else that consumes energy directly and
indirectly with cooling costs. I have failed to find a new cable modem
with a built-in firewall. My cable modem is a comparatively new device
with newer power efficient technology and runs considerably cooler.
Essentially I'm trying to find the most energy efficient configuration
for my system.

Why would you want to?
