I'm pretty sure there is not a way to do this. You would think it would be easily possible, since they are able to get time from the host.
Btw, you can do this with guess running on IBM's z/OS. There is a "vmcp" command that shows all kinds of great info about the host. "vmcp ind user". It doesn't help, but i've been working on SuSE running in z/OS and wrote a lot of scripts to configure an OS based on using that command. I would love to do the same thing in Linux servers on VMware, but there is no way to read the Vmname from the VM. But, you can remove the 70-persistent-net.rules file, then when the VM boots, it will get a DHCP address. Then you can have a script to run on first boot to download a file and load the IP/hostname from that.
