Monty Widenius is the original guy that started MySQL and sold it to Sun. He actually left Sun shortly before Oracle bought them, due to his differences with Sun management. (After the billion dollar purchase, he supposedly only pocketed $20 million).
He actually started the MariaDB fork back in 2009 when he left Sun. It didn't get a lot of traction at first. I believe it was Redhat that became unhappy with what Oracle was doing with MySQL. Since MariaDB had matured into a superior product, and Oracle was a direct competitor of Redhat's (with Oracle Enterprise Linux, itself a clone of RHEL), they decided to ditch MySQL and go with MariaDB with RHEL 7.
