Mike,

Making changes directly to configuration files is not supported. I do not
recommend it.

In a future release, we will add the ability to manage MarkLogic Server's
configuration by writing XQuery code. This will be a supported alternative to
the admin UI, not direct manipulation of config files.

Is there any concern about updating database config by:

1) shutting down
2) editing databases.xml (say to copy indexing config; not creating new db
or forest)
3) starting up

I tried with a test setup and it seems to be doing the right thing
(re-indexing the databases that changed config).

This is so much easier and less error-prone than using the web UI to cut and
paste all the fields, indexing parameters, phrase-throughs, range indexes
and so on.
