In the linked article, the author gives as a sample XQuery code snippet the following:

  for $author in $coll/author[name = ‘Don Chamberlin’
     or (age > 20 and age < 30)]
  return
     <b>{$author.name}: {$author.age}</b>

Are "$author.name" and "$author.age" pure syntax mistakes, or is there some flavor of XQuery in which those are meaningful?
