Spike, I think what you're looking for is an element-value query <http://developer.marklogic.com/pubs/4.1/apidocs/cts-query.html#cts:element-value-query>. This will allow you to match against the text content of an element. There additional options for things like diacritics and wildcards as well. Hopefully this helps.

This usually indicates you are not doing exact searches. Have you tried adding "exact" as an option? Otherwise it might assume the passes search string is a phrase and apply cts:tokenize on it..
