Hi Paul, The contents of the element is type casted to the type chosen for the range index. It is not the same as applying fn:data on the contents, but the result will appear the same in cases like this. (See admin guide http://developer.marklogic.com/pubs/4.1/books/admin.pdf paragraph 21.1)
A collation specifies the order for sorting strings. So that won't make a difference I guess.. (See search dev guide http://developer.marklogic.com/pubs/4.1/books/search-dev-guide.pdf paragraph 18.2) You haven't said what your problem exactly is, but I am guessing you were expecting white-space between the text nodes. I am afraid you will have to put those *in* your data to get those in the index. Indexation cannot add characters that are not there..
