I will try this soon, but I'm skeptical ... 
Your comment implied that the cts:query* constructors "filtered the
result set" ...
so how would cts:hilight know to "reach out" to other documents besides
the text I was hilighting ?
As apposed to "filter the result of a query on the paragraph" where
adding documents to the filter list wont do much good
as the source expression is just a string.

But perhaps its magic :)

I see no reason why cts:highlight would only support cts queries
partially. Haven't you tried yet? ;-)
