We tend to use one of two approaches, depending on what we're doing. For things like HTTP servers, we use xdmp:random() (it's in group.xsd as the default value for http-server-id).
For users and groups we use a hash based on the user or group name so that we can detect an attempt to create the user or group multiple times in the same transaction (via a conflicting update of the same URI).
