We all want to design general solutions, myself included, but we also think
really hard about solving the problem in front of us. YAGNI is a great help in
keeping focused.

Guessing the future is really, really hard, even after thirty years in the
business. My "general" solutions don't usually fit what what people really want
next year. They end up as baggage. Focused solutions make people happy and are
easy to understand and extend. Every time.

I'm sure there are *some things* in ML that are 'general purpose' ... In fact
the *entire product* is general purpose, generally :).

There is a principle in agile programming named "You Ain't Gonna Need It", or
YAGNI. It means, only design and implement what you need. Designing
general-purpose mechanisms based on guesses about the future makes the current
code more complicated.

Usually, implementing exactly what you need makes it easier to implement what
you need next time.
