It depends on whether you request that replica forests be included in
the backup.
From the Admin UI, there is a check box you can select to include
replica forests.
From the XQuery API, xdmp:database-backup-validate() has a parameter
that specifies whether to include replica forests.
The backup should not be failing due to forests being in sync
replicating state. Is your configured master open as master, or are you
operating in a failed over state where one of the configured replica is
open and acting as master? In this case, you may get an error if you try
to do a backup without including replicas.
