Tim, I believe that means the XML parser saw something odd in a comment node.
The rest of the error message ought to specify the character and the location:
something like "Unexpected character %1 in comment at %2 line %3" (from the
Messages/XDMP-en.xml file).
For example, in cq:
xdmp:unquote('<!-- -- -->')
=>
[1.0-ml] XDMP-DOCCOMMENTCHAR: xdmp:unquote("<!-- -- -->") -- Unexpected
character " " in comment at line 1
