Hi Will,

It looks like you are on a roll...this looks like a bug to me. It appears that
this is working on the index resolution side, but not working on the filter
side. If you only have "xyz" in the excluded field (and nowhere else in the
fragment), then this will return correctly. That is because the index
resolution takes place at the fragment level, and you are searching below the
fragment.

As a workaround, you should be able to do a field-word-query and query the
field with the empty string as a name (because word query is just a field that
includes everything by default, or if you modify the word query settings,
includes whatever you specify).

As a workaround, you can change your word-query to a field-word-query of the
field with no name, as follows:

cts:search(//note, cts:field-word-query("", "xyz"))

I will file a bug on the MarkLogic side.

Subject: [MarkLogic Dev General] Indexing clarification re excluded elements

Can someone help me understand what's supposed to happen when you exclude
elements from the word query index? Here is an approximation of our content:

<doc>
<chapter>
<p>...<note>...</note></p>
<p>...<note>...</note></p>
</chapter>
...
</doc>

<chapter> is set to fragment root, and I have excluded <note> from the word
query index in the Admin console and reindexed. Shouldn't cts:search(//note,
cts:word-query("xyz")) return nothing? I'm getting results.

Thanks,

Will
