The easiest way is to do a cts:or-query for both "12a-1" and "12a1".  Basically 
expand the user's search to include the various ways the identifier could be 
written.

Make sure you have fast phrase search on, to allow searches for "12a-1" to be 
better optimized because that's tokenized as two words in a phrase.
