About server restarts: you might be interested in using the Content Processing Framework. CPF tasks survive a system restart.. One thing you might want to check is what happens to the task server on a system restart. I believe the task server is cleared when the system restarts. I assume the behavior is the same with the most recent version of MarkLogic. The reason I bring up the task server is that xdmp:spawn places tasks on the task server.
