Ok curious.
Why ideally do you want to keep the quotes around 
 
"A \"Credit Crunch\"?",

But not 

"A Better World for All",

Presumably the quotes are meaningful.

If your goal is  to simply remove the leading and trailing quotes, then you 
could do a regex like
replace($result,'^"|"$','') then pass to xdmp:to-json
