Harry and Michael, Thanks very much to both of you. Good to know that I do in fact need to create custom dictionaries. I looked a couple of Open Office dictionaries, but some of them contain extraneous characters because they're specially formatted for use with the OO spell checker, as opposed to wordlists per se. At the moment I'm having better luck with aspell wordlists. If I'm able to create and use such custom dictionaries successfully, I'll post them to the ML community site.
