Clark, thank you very much. I did in fact have an XDBC server running. After
seeing your response I did a netstat (I am on Windows 7) and checked the ID
of the process using the port (port 8006 as recommended). 
It was MarkLogic. I then deleted the XDBC server with the result that the
netstat entry disappeared. I have also verified through ML's admin interface
that no other ML server is using the port (which I 
assume wouldn't be possible anyway).
