[MarkLogic Dev General] Any ideas - '?' was entity reference?

I'm getting the following error when making this request:

"Invalid entity reference IDType="

Is there a dialect of Marklogic where the '?' precedes an entity reference?
I always thought that needed to be an ampersand, something like &amp;
