This appears to be possible now :
let $x := <hello>world</hello>
return
xdmp:save("\\MARKLDEV4\Logs\hello-from-markldev1.xml", $x)
Just had to give read/write permission to the machine account
DOMAIN\MARKLDEV1$ for the "Logs" shared folder.
