In order to search binary documents, you should enable the CPF processing pipeline for PDF. That will extract the PDF into XHTML, and that is searchable by MarkLogic. As a bonus, in many cases you can use the XHTMl to view the document inside a web page without having to use Acrobat. (It’s sometimes more helpful with other documents such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, where the startup time can be annoying to end users.)
