MarkLogic is installed as root but the software runs as the less privileged
daemon user by default. You can configure that to be any other user in the
system, with the understanding that the directories holding the journal files
and forests have to be owned by the same users.

It’s not uncommon for software to be installed as root. For example, pretty
much everything that goes into /usr/bin is owned as root so that you have to
essentially root the machine to change that software. At runtime, however, a
non-privileged user can run the software.

Subject: [MarkLogic Dev General] MarkLogic Linux Install - Preinstall Question

Hello,

We are installing MarkLogic in a Redhat Linux environment.

The documentation states that we should install the MarkLogic rpm as ‘root’.
This restricts our ability to edit any MarkLogic files (such as admin) in the
future.

Can a marklogic Linux user/group be created and used in place of ‘root’ ?

Thanks,
Bob Larsen
