One of the more useful portmanteaus of the modern era is the word
“presstitute.” It perfectly captures the essence of 90% of the media hacks
out there. In a similar vein, I have slowly come to the conclusion that
many programmers are “progstitutes.” A progstitute cares nothing for the
beauty of algorithms or elegant code and doesn’t even give a crap about
trendy notions like “technical debt.” Progstitutes only care about getting
enough coding done to garner an immediate payoff. They will use any tool,
no matter how hideous or awful, just as long as they see some “release” of
funds. So I would ask, “Does your audience harbor a significant number of
progstitutes?” If the answer is yes show them the money because they won’t
care about anything else.
