No problem with turning that into some kind of project dependency

This means you've been correct with your initial mail.  We agree that
we have work to do and we have no clear idea of how it is going to
look in the end ;-)

Yes, this will be necessary.  We need to add more semantics to
artifacts as well as dependencies.  We completely agree here.
