Oops, staring me in the face & I didn't see it. Those direct commands (update/build/etc.) attempt to do a quick "semi-interactive" text based run, hence the code path that causes the problem. :( I don't have time to look into this now, but please look at running the gump script in the cron directory. That does a full (XHTML) based run, and ought get you further. Good luck w/ this.
