I agree that there are still some rough edges with the project- split, something we are working to solve.

Someone on irc mentioned using 'ant tar', but it seems to be currently
broken, since it (a) requires forrest and (b) forrest fails to build
the docs on OSX 10.6.1, complaining about some datatype nonsense.

What is the new standard for building a distribution?

AFAIK the only issue with the 'ant docs' target (which 'ant target' relies on) is that you need java1.5 - if you can confirm this isn't the case would you mind opening a jira?
