I should we shouldn't rule out a name just because the English pronunciation is similar to another project. Will people really confuse Apache Hyena and Apache Jena? Would have to be a face-to-face conversation or a recording where either party do not really know what they are talking about.
That said, "Hoya" seems like a fine name to me as well. I do wonder whether it is a large enough project to be standalone (rather then being folded into either Hadoop or HBase).
