HI, > To make the guide even more practical, I suggest adding a section > featuring "fake examples" that illustrate common neutrality pitfalls. > Alongside these examples, it would be beneficial to include practical > "tools" or steps that communities can use to address or proactively > prevent these issues.
I may already be a little ahead of you. While these are not yet linked directly from Neutrality in Practice, we already have a substantial set of real examples in the Incubator training material. From the case studies at [1] we have multiple examples that illustrate neutrality pitfalls as well as positive, healthy involvement from vendors, for example: - Case Study 2 on Apache Wave - Case Study 3 on Apache Superset - Case Study 5 on Apache Iceberg - Case Study 6 on Apache Blur - Case Study 7 on Apache MXNet - Case Study 8 on Apache Airflow - Case Study 9 on Apache Zipkin - Case Study 15 on Apache Kafka - Case Study 16 on Apache Pulsar - Case Study 17 on Apache APISIX [2] expands on this with more details. These cover the full spectrum, from projects that struggled with single-vendor dominance to ones where corporate contributors participated in a genuinely community-led way. If I were doing a public presentation, it would probably be best to anonymise these. To avoid singling out podlings, many of those patterns have already been distilled into anonymised scenarios in Practising The Apache Way [3], such as: - The Off-List Decision - The Conflicted PPMC - The Unreliable Narrator - Private Discussions and Missing Context - The Employer-Dominated Podling - Corporate Withdrawal and Loss of Momentum - Brand and Governance Blur - Branding Confusion - Ready… or Rushed? - The Graduation Surprise - The Single-Maintainer Risk - The Reluctant Leader And here [4] we have some interactive scenarios, including all of Practising The Apache Way and some expanded scenarios on - Brand and Governance Blur [5] - The Employer-Dominated Podling [6] Several others address related issues of independence and power balance. And here [7] we have: - Vendor Dominance Without Conflict - All Work No Community - One Podling Two Tribes - Premature Graduation Push Kind Regards, Justin 1. https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/Incubator+Case+Studies 2. https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/Expanded+Incubator+Case+Studies 3. https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/Practicing+The+Apache+Way 4. https://incubator.apache.org/training/scenarios/index.html 5. https://incubator.apache.org/scenarios/BrandandGovernanceBlur.html 6. https://incubator.apache.org/scenarios/TheEmployerDominatedPodling.html 7 https://incubator.apache.org/training/scenarios.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] For additional commands, e-mail: [email protected]
