Same for me - the automatic configuration is great for most users. 

Having this "common" project would be great because it'll allow the
development of a connector that combines the best features of mod_jk and
mod_webapp. 

Of course, this depends on having the "commons" aproved and started in a
reasonable time, and on aproval from tomcat-dev people to share the
connector, and of course on interest from Pier ( who is the main author
of mod_webapp ) and Dan and the other people who maintain mod_jk.
 
BTW, the protocol could be used for other projects that need to connect to
apache ( and in many ways it belongs more to httpd then tomcat ).

( I would guess mod_perl and mod_php could also benefit from the load
balancing features )
