Just to rephrase myself.
Don't want to offend any htdig ppl. The term "limited scope" is in
reference to it's projected application. htdig is a web searching & index
application.
Lucene is a searching and index application aimed at any information
retrival application.

I think that you will find that htdig's scope is limited compared to what
lucene can do. Lucene is far more than websearching and indexing. It
utilizes some searching algorithms that htdig doesn't.
Lucene isn't a command line util. But it can easily be added on.
Here is an idea.
There can be a lucene war file that you can drop into Tomcat or any
java/jsp container. It can be deployed with it's own admin to setup the
searching and indexing module for you.
Sophisticated web searching done quickly. With plenty of room for
enhancements.
