Dear Vincent: The job sounds interesting. I am an applied mathematician and a professor at the University of Minnesota. In my "spare" time, I work with open source. Primarily with Apache, Jakarta-Tomcat, all kinds of databases (including Xindice), xml, and Cocoon.
I have actually developed a full blown web site that servers thousands of documents and handreds of database query and dynamics pages. Not a single page on this site is HTML, and the user can reuest the pages in one of several formats (html, pdf, docbook, and so on). I am an expert in Java (taught Java courses several times). Of course all of these expertise come with a price. If you are still interested, either email me (with a copy to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and perhaps we can chat.
