I have to disagree. I'm a lurker on general@xml and general@jakarta, only to keep up on the latest issues in the community. the mailing lists are passive for me; I get the data no matter what and can choose to read or ignore it. if I had to depend on active participation, I'd never get around to perusing the forums just to see what's going on.
for specific module questions (generally tomcat or ant), I access the archives, and then subscribe to the appropriate list until I'm satisfied, an then unsubscribe. (gmane sounds like an even better alternative) an appropriately setup email agent with filtering and threading is the key. and if MS outlook can handle it, other agents should be able to keep up.
