Before going into a technical comparison regarding performance and different areas of strength I have one point to mention that was just brought up last week when I was having Iftar with Zaid and Ammar; as I played around with BSD I truely understood the idea of a 'GNU/Linux System' vs. say FreeBSD as a complete OS.
Linux as we repeat is the kernel only, then comes the GNU tools that make up a UNIX-like system, and then the different applications that you actually use, so a Linux distribution is a 'tabeekh' of all this. *BSD comes as a single complete system. just my 2 cents.
