to join a windows domain, and to be fully integrated into one, you need to use 
winbindd which is a subset of the samba project. it's a bit of a hassle, at 
least last time i did it (i couldn't find a decent tutorial back then).

to just access shared stuff you can login as usual using gnome's nautilus, in 
the location bar put smb://hostname/shared_directory then login as a domain 
account.
