also there is something called ATM on LINUX its a distribution especially made for ATM machines i have no idea about how wide this distro is used but u can get more information from: http://lrcwww.epfl.ch/linux-atm/dist.html
this distro is only 441 KB as written in the site
ATMs r much similar to PCs they have removable storage devices such as CDs and floppies, there r output and input devices they even communicate using ethernet.
these machines can be infected with viruses or warms they even can be exploited and so hacked they have firewalls just like any other Computer on a network
imagine a nice tiny hacker drives a machine crazy so that it starts spreading money all over
that would be a sight ;)
