The history of languages can be fascinating. The first versions of Matlab
were in Fortran to try to provide some of the 'nice' features of APL.
If you look at the guts of IBM's vector processing on versions of the 360
it is clear that that the creators had APL in their background, look at
some of the facilites they built in.
I don't claim Mathematica came out of APL, but like many it attempted to
provide some of the 'primitives' of APL.
