Earlier in this thread, Fred Bone explained:
"-ad" represents a suffix which can be attached to a word
to denote a collective or "set". For example, "dyad" and "triad"
meaning "set of two", "set of three". "Monad" is sort-of "set of
one". The same suffix turns up in, for example, "Iliad"
"collection of tales about Troy") and "Olympiad" ("period
of four years between Olympic games").

I do not know Greek at all, but this explanation sounds
convincing to me.
