I have taken a peek at the image3 addon under J601 and 90% of things work and many users woulld be able to use it as is -- some minor changes are needed to get the labs working and then 99% of things work.
A 'beta' with 99% of things working would be a valuable start, though I can understand a reluctance to do so. I used it under J504 and really want to use it with J601.
However, I also hope to take a more leisurely look at the scripts and move them to J601 style in a more substantial revision later.
You are already most of the way towards thinking of a beta with the simple fixes.
I could just change y. to y, but then I use y for two different meanings on the first line which I usually avoid, or I could rename y u v and x, but it seems kind of strange to avoid y u v as variable names in yuv color space. I know there is no correct answer to my query -- since it involves style, but I really do want to know what others think.
In most areas I avoid using these names, but in some statistical contexts x,y,m,n,u have deeply entrenched conventional uses, and I find it easier to reassign the function arguments and follow the conventional usage in the body of the function. It is not ideal but easier to understand and maintain.
Stylistic consistency is valuable, so I only use the above where it improves comprehension and the balance of maintenance costs is advantageous, but for me as a user both comprehension and maintenance rank ahead of style.
This addon is a wonderful contribution to J. Thanks for the work you are doing to make it available under J601.
