I have only a sketchy knowledge of MATLAB (and
I have written 0 MATLAB programs).  If I were
comparing J and MATLAB, the following are areas
I would investigate:

- consistent treatment of arrays, especially
arrays with rank > 2
- adverbs and conjunctions (higher-order functions)
- non-numeric data types
- comparing J and MATLAB solutions to a set of 
problems e.g. those in 
http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/Essays
