I disagree (that Y! is always available within seconds),
the only place it is a real nuisance is for urgent messages
(better not to use a free email service if urgency is a
priority) and for things like the forum where it is easy
to "speak out of turn" if a thread has some messages delayed...

Maybe we all have inflated expectations of email.
