Is anyone using J in the filed of computational bioinformatics or
computational biology?

I am wondering if that is a practical combination. I know that python, R
and Pearl are used as languages in those fields

Lisp is also used (see http://nostoc.stanford.edu/Docs/). Your work in soft computing is the closest thing that I've seen to bioinformatics in J.
