The most likely explanation IMHO is Mailman's email-address-disguising 
feature.

I would put a modest amount of money on the proposition that it only 
happens when the @ is both preceded and followed by a string of (one or 
more) characters matching [-.a-zA-Z0-9] (and possibly a few more).
