Bill -

I'm getting used to the quirks of the Wiki, so that's slowing me down, but
I'm getting stuff
up eventually.

I lilked Shaw's intro as well but don't seem to have a good or current copy
of it -
perhaps if he's lurking around here he may provide one?

I've heard good things about GNUplot but have not invested the time in
understanding
it. Do you use a Unix or Windows version of it?

Hear! Hear! Thanks!

Some observations to your notes:

  Beginner's Lament:

I'm reviewing J.E.H. Shaw's Warwick Guide to J right now and
learning (or perhaps relearning) a few useful things. I also have
the old ISI ring-bound manuals on my desk, next to my newer,
perfect-bound 3.05 set. Some of the old stuff is still valuable,
even if the language has changed a bit since 3.05. That said, a
beginner might not be as understanding of or patient with any
language changes from 3.05 to 6.01.

Interfaces to Other Languages and Environments

    I added the Interfaces/Text
    (
http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/Interfaces/Text?highlight=%28interfaces%29)
page recently, for I think many (especially beginners) may
appreciate simple ways to get common forms of data into J, and
Chris's old description works well. Perhaps others could add other
ideas -- reading a text file in, etc.

  NYCJUG/Projects/Backup

I sorta like the Gnuplot GUI. The GUI simply builds a command line
in the IDE, and you hit Enter to execute it. After a while, you
learn the commands you use a lot, but both approaches are obviously
integrated. That sounds similar to your AIX example.

Thanks again,

Bill
