I think "array" works better when you describe what it
does, than when you describe what it is. For instance:
Arrays arrange data.
Of course, you wind up having to approach the various issues
from a variety of angles, to give the reader adequate perspective.
This can lead to some amusing quips:
Empty arrays arrange nothing.
If you describe what arrays do, rather than what arrays
are, you are more likely to give descriptions the sort of finite
and constrained nature which characterizes computer systems
in general.
And, of course, sentences which use action verbs tend to be
zippier than sentences which use the verb "to be" (like this
one).
