I was using  u  in the sense that modifiers use  u  -- a reference to the LHA 
of the modifier.  As in:

   1 : 'u^:_1 (y)'  vs  1 : u^:_1: (y)'

That was part of the tricky question.

The documentation is "official" but doesn't discuss the __use__ of a gerund
