After some abortive attempts trying to get a desktop client working
(could connect but not log in) I started searching for a web-based
client and found

http://ircatwork.com 
"This is a free, open-use web based IRC client. You can use this IRC
client to connect to ANY IRC server."

Using that I was able to successfully connect to irc.freenode.org &
#jsoftware
(unfortunately no one else was there!)
