Desktop IRC client most likely requires a non-standard
port to be open in the firewall. Which is a very bad
restriction to connect from various places.

IRC is lot harder to connect since all those firewalls sprawl uncontrollably.
But there are web gateways out there, just need to find good ones.
However, as Dan Bron mentioned before, IRC is quite distinct medium from all the rest and web based client does not exploit its uniqueness fully.
