The base class jzgrid does default CELLEDIT to 1, but the grid verb
itself defaults to 0. This is because the grid verb has no mechanism for
picking up changes to the underlying data, though you can always add
this yourself.

A matrix left argument to grid is a list of option names and values, so
the following will do what you want:

   (,:'celledit';1) grid !/~i.8
